If someone is ill or disabled to work, ESA provides the financial support. If the degree of the disability is not severe to the extent that one cannot work; then it provides the personalized help to find the suitable work.

Types of ESA
There are two types of ESA that one can get.
Contributory ESA: It's a flat rate benefit not affected by the incomes and savings until the claimant is put in the 'support group. The payment of contributory ESA will be limited to 12 months.
Income-related ESA: it is a means tested benefit. The means are compared with the savings and an ESA is worked out from this. It can be paid solely or as an addition to contributory ESA. This ESA is not limited and cannot be paid if the savings are £16,000.
A person has to take an assessment test in order to know which kind he will be getting.
How to claim
The easiest way to claim ESA is by contacting authorities telephonically. The documents needed at the time of making the claim are National Insurance number, medical certificate, GP's address and phone number, home and mobile telephone numbers, mortgage or landlord details, council tax bill, employer's address and telephone number and dates of employment or last day worked, bank account details and details of any other money that a person is getting, e.g. benefits or sick pay.
