UCI & CFI Partner ID Sports To Organize Mumbai Cyclothon-Tour de Mumbai Iand II 2011

  • (1888PressRelease) January 08, 2011 - Aigle, Switzerland/ Mumbai, India - Swiss-based International cycling federation the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and India's Cycling Federation of India (CFI) jointly announced a partnership with ID Sports, a sports management firm, to launch the second edition of the Mumbai Cyclothon -Tour de Mumbai I and II 2011 to aggressively promote cycling in India. The event will also see the inaugural Nashik Cyclothon 2011.

    The Tour de Mumbai I and II 2011 are already listed on the UCI's Asia Tour Calendar. The highlight of the two International Class 1 races is the participation of two internationally acclaimed Pro Tour Cycling teams - USA's Radioshack -- the winners of Tour de France 2010 and Italy's Liquigas - a Grand Tour double winner.

    For the mass participation, the second edition of the Mumbai Cyclothon, the organizers are expecting more than 10,000 cyclists to participate in this unique initiative this year, higher than 7,000 enthusiasts in 2010.

    Philippe Chevallier, Director UCI, said, "We are looking forward to see how these races develop as international events on UCI calendar. We believe India has a huge potential for a representation of professional cycling on a global level with initiatives like Tour de Mumbai I and II.

    The International race will be held in two stages, The Nashik leg will be held on 11thFebruary and Mumbai leg will be organized on 13th February. The first leg will cover 158 km and the second leg will cover 117 km. The event carries prize money of $50,000 for the winner.

    There is a National Elite race with CFI approved riders from 21 states taking part in a 60 km race in Nashik. This will enable the local riders to practice on the International track. The prize money for the National Elite race is Rs. 5 lakh only

    The mass participation rides under both Mumbai & Nashik Cyclothon include four categories; Amateur Ride, Green Ride, Corporate Challenge Ride and Kids Ride. All these races have gift hampers for winners.

    In Mumbai, the Mumbai Cyclothon will start and end at MET, Bandra with participants cycling along the scenic Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link enroute. In Nashik, it will be begin and end at Nashik gate and move along to the Bhosale College Circle. In Nashik, for the professional riders the race will also go onto the picturesque Kasara Ghat.
