  • Denver, CO (1888PressRelease) July 17, 2014 - The Medical Center of Aurora has been ranked the #4 hospital in the Denver metro area and the #4 hospital in Colorado as part of the U.S. News & World Report's 2014-15 Best Hospitals rankings, available online at www.usnews.com/best-hospitals. There are over 100 hospitals in the state of Colorado. The latest rankings showcase 608 hospitals out of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide, covering 100 metro areas and 200 non-metro areas in the U.S. The rankings, annually published by U.S. News for the past 25 years, will also be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2015 guidebook, which will be available in August.

The Medical Center of Aurora has also been recognized for high performance in ten medical specialties:

    • Cancer
    • Cardiology and Heart Surgery
    • Diabetes and Endocrinology
    • Gastroenterology and GI Surgery
    • Geriatrics
    • Nephrology
    • Neurology and Neurosurgery
    • Orthopedics
    • Pulmonology
    • Urology

The Medical Center of Aurora was recognized in 2013 as the #4 hospital both in the Denver metro area and in Colorado, and in 2012 as the #5 hospital.

"We are proud to once again receive the distinction of being a top hospital in Colorado," said Richard Hammett, CEO of The Medical Center of Aurora. "Our physicians and staff are dedicated to patient safety and high quality care, and it's an honor to be recognized for these efforts by U.S. News and by other organizations such as The Joint Commission and the ANCC Magnet Designation."

U.S. News made several changes to the Best Hospitals rankings methodology this year, including adding new data and greater emphasis on patient safety. Patient safety metrics now account for 10 percent of each hospital's overall score, in most specialties - twice as much as in past years. The role of hospital reputation, as determined through a national survey of medical specialists, diminished by 5 percentage points. Risk-adjusted survival rates, adequacy of nurse staffing and patient volume are among the array of data points on each ranked hospital that are freely available at www.usnews.com/best-hospitals.

"U.S. News strives to provide patients and their families with the most comprehensive data available on hospitals," said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. "With an estimated 400,000 deaths occurring in hospitals each year from medical errors, measuring safety performance is critical to understanding how well a hospital cares for its patients."
