U.N. Special Representative of the Secretary-General Margot Wallstrom to Speak at Adelphi University on December 2, 2010
Distinguished speaker Margot Wallstrom will address the Adelphi community on December 2, 2010.
- Nassau-Suffolk, NY (1888PressRelease) November 09, 2010 - Adelphi University is pleased to welcome United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Margot Wallström. She will deliver "Ending Sexual Violence: From Recognition to Action," on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. in Adelphi's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.
Ms. Wallström has been an advocate of women's rights throughout her political career, beginning with her role as a minister in the Swedish government and continuing with her positions as the environment commissioner and vice president of the European Commission. She is currently the chair of the United Nations Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict, and since 2007 she has served as chair of the Council of Women World Leaders Ministerial Initiative, where she promotes the appointment of women to positions of higher responsibility.
The recipient of several honorary doctorates and awards for her work on sustainable development and climate change, Ms. Wallström was voted "Commissioner of the Year" by the European Voice newspaper in 2002. In 2004, she co-authored the book, The People's Europe or Why is it so hard to love the EU? She also co-founded the European Union's inter-institutional group of women and was a key supporter of the 50-50 Campaign for Democracy by the European Women's Lobby, where she worked to promote a more gender-balanced European Union.
