Two Senior Care Providers Join to Support the 2,300 Emmett, Idaho Seniors
Home Instead Senior Care of Boise (HISC) and The Cottages of Emmett will offer a free memory screening on Monday, February 21, 10:30am to 4pm for area seniors.
- Boise City, ID (1888PressRelease) February 15, 2011 - There are 26 thousand diagnosed Alzheimer's cases in Idaho. In support of its seniors, Home Instead Senior Care of Boise (HISC) and The Cottages of Emmett will offer a free memory screening on Monday, February 21, 10:30a to 4p.
"In Boise, five times more people participated in the memory screening this year than last year. Memory loss is at the forefront for seniors and their older children making this screening time appropriate" HISC owner and Certified Senior Advisor, Elizabeth Britton said.
The screening is a precursor to The Cottages of Emmett's start of its Alzheimer's Support Group beginning in March 2011. "I started the support group because I wanted to help" said The Cottages director, Doris Foruria, "The screening is an awesome program to include for Emmett".
"Having a memory screening will empower a family with knowledge, options, choices and support" said Britton.
Specially trained staff from HISC will conduct the face-to-face screening developed by the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. Screening includes a series of questions and tasks to test memory, thinking ability, and other intellectual functions.
"This is not a medical screening or a diagnostic tool, but is a mini memory skills assessment -- a first step to short term memory detection that could lead to dementia and Alzheimer's care" said Britton. According to the Alzheimer Foundation of America (AFA), some memory problems can be treated with vitamins and/or thyroid treatments. Others might be caused by pre-Alzheimer's signs like dementia. Britton advocates, "Without a screening, early diagnosis is not possible".
The test does not substitute for a professional diagnosis, but this screening can provide an indication if an individual should follow up with a primary care provider or other qualified healthcare professional.
