“The Stone Trilogy” and “SELCHIE” by Judith M. Day

    About “The Stone Trilogy”:
What is the secret of Ben Cruachan, the hollow mountain that towers above the small village of Taynuilt in Argyll? Has it anything to do with a cat which disappeared from the riding school or the appearance of a stray pony?

As a twelve year-old Jennifer Lindsay comes across the secret that will govern a part of her life well into her adulthood, only then will the mystery of Samantha, the cat, be solved for her broken-hearted owner, Alison, Jennifer’s cousin.

And what role does the piper play in all this? As he says later, “If all else fails, there’s always the music.”

    About “SELCHIE”:
In this charming children’s story, Jude is staying on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. On her walk home after a night out at a dance at the north end of Barra, she hears a sound which brings an unexpected change to her life.

Who is Ruari Mor, and how does he know about her even though they have never met before? Is he really of the Selchie… seal people from Scottish lore who can take on human lives and suddenly become seals again? Jude is sceptical, but....

    Excerpt from “The Stone Trilogy”:
The crowds of the Sith parted and the little party made for the beginning of the passage. As they passed the jumble of boggarts, a very small one hissed at her and made a skimming movement above her head.

“BRING THAT BOGGART TO ME!” roared Arshter. Two guards plucked the small boggart from the group and then a terrible wailing rent the air.
“Oh stop!” cried Jennifer. “Don’t hurt it. It doesn’t know any better. It’s only small.” With that, she seized the wailing boggart from the guards and held it against her shoulder. She stroked the strange, furry body and leathery wings and the awful wailing ceased. It began to make a noise like Jamelia’s guinea pigs, a rather musical chuckling. Something strange, though, was happening. She could feel under her hand that the boggart was changing. She looked around the cavern and saw that all the Sith were gazing at the creature on her shoulder as if they expected something to happen. Above her head, two large boggarts and two smaller ones were hovering and chattering.

    Excerpt from “SELCHIE”:

Curiosity seemed to come over her. “What was it like?”
“Well, just a neat little house,” I replied conjuring up the scene.
“He didn’t have a fur rug or blanket somewhere, did he?”
I thought carefully. “There was a greyish fur pelt on the end of the chaise,” I said slowly. She looked at me keenly and seemed to choose her words carefully.
“Tell me, oh please tell me, Jude, that you didn’t touch the pelt or anything it rested upon?”
“Well, I might have leaned against the chaise,” I recalled.
“Oh mo chrech! He is of the selchie. That pelt is his own seal skin. If you touch it or anything it rest upon, the selchie can claim you too.”
