Tutors International Welcomes Changes To Employment Agency Law Ensuring Better Protection Of Children With Compulsory CRB Checks For Tutors
The founder of Tutors International welcomes the changes to employment agency law which ensure all private tutor agencies will carry out CRB checks on tutors.
- (1888PressRelease) December 20, 2010 - The founder of leading global private tuition provider Tutors International, Adam Caller, has welcomed recent changes to Employment Agencies Act 1973 and the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003. The changes ensure that all employment agencies, including those which connect parents with private tutors, must carry out a CRB check on any individuals supplied to work with children. The changes to legislation came into force in October 2010 and have not been widely publicised. For more information, visit www.tutors-international.com or call +44 (0) 1865 435 135.
"For some time I have been concerned about the lax nature of the law regarding the role of agencies who connect tutors and parents," said Adam, "most specifically the aspect which put the onus onto the parents to check the suitability of the candidate and ensure that they would pose no risk to their child. Many parents simply don't have the resources or knowledge of the intricacies of criminal record and background checks to be able to carry them out independently." Adam explained. "However, this change in the law puts the responsibility firmly onto the shoulders of the tutor agency, leaving no doubt as to who must check the suitability of a potential candidate."
"This makes no difference to the way Tutors International provides private tutors as we have been carrying out CRB checks, ECRB checks and a tailored background check by Kroll on all candidates put forward to families for many years now," Adam continued. "We have recently added a new check called The Police Certificate which gives rapid access to information stored in the Police National Computer. Along with carrying out extensive reference checks in the native language of the referees, I am confident in saying we carry out the most thorough background checks in the private education industry."
"Whilst other businesses saw background checks as a bothersome process they didn't need to fulfill by law, we always saw them as a critical part of our service, and at the very least a moral obligation as employers of individuals who are expected to be with the child without any other adult supervision for several hours a day," Adam said. "I'm so relieved that private tutor agencies and "connection services" can no longer ignore that moral responsibility. Now we need to ensure that parents are aware of the change in the law, and know that the first question they need to ask an agency with thousands of tutors on their books is: 'How many of these tutors have had CRB checks carried out in the last 3 months?' I fear that in the case of many tutor agencies, the answer will be unsatisfactory as it is prohibitively expensive for the bulk approach to tuition outsourcing. It will be interesting to see what impact it has on the private tuition industry," Adam concluded.
