The Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center is celebrating its seventh year in the Conejo Valley and launching a new Teens class, adding to its full range of class offerings for beginner through advanced students.
The growth our meditation center experienced in recent years is remarkable and demonstrates meditation's practical application in our daily lives.
(1888PressRelease) February 27, 2015 - Westlake Village, CA - The Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center (TKBC) is celebrating its fourth anniversary at the Water Court in Westlake Village with an Open House. The spiritual center has been part of the Conejo Valley community for seven years and relocated to Westlake after outgrowing their previous location on Pierce Court in Thousand Oaks in just three years.
The Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center is one of 1200 centers in 40 countries around the world founded by the Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a prolific author and internationally renowned Buddhist teacher.
Resident Teacher, Kadam Rebecca Gauthier is a charismatic teacher and an inspiring example of Buddhism in practice. Gauthier, a Western lay practitioner has been studying under Geshe Kelsang's guidance and teaching for more than 20 years.
"When our minds are more peaceful, we are less prone to stress, becoming overwhelmed, frustrated and angry. By learning how to meditate, when we encounter problems or difficulties we can respond in a positive, proactive and solution-oriented manner because we have a clear and calm mind. Children who are three years old to retired men and women are all reaping the enormous benefits of meditation - it is so wonderful!"
TKBC offers a variety of meditation classes that are suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators and everyone is welcome. There are a dozen classes offered at the Center, including Lunchtime Meditation, Monday through Friday, evening classes Monday through Thursday and Prayers for World Peace every Sunday from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM.
The Center also offers Dharma for Kids classes every Sunday, for children ages four to eleven, and a monthly Teens Class, for young people from ages twelve to seventeen. Both classes run concurrently with Prayers for World Peace.
Donté Henry, the center's Administrative Director teaches the Teens class.
"In the Teens class, we offer students an opportunity to express themselves, share their ideas and learn how to tap into their innate ability to make sense of their world and deal with challenges through improving their states of mind.
Held on the first Sunday of the month, Teens class students learn simple meditations and other methods to calm their minds and deal with negative feelings. Classes include a short discussion about everyday experiences relevant to teens, guided meditation, and practices that foster habits such as consideration for others, cooperation, patience and giving."
Stacy Shaul of Newbury Park is the parent of a student in the Teens class. "Teens these days don't have a lot of opportunities to quiet their minds especially with the lure of social media so prevalent in their lives. The TKBC Teen class is teaching my son about the importance of learning to quiet his mind. It is also giving him techniques to deal with everyday problems and weather the craziness of our lives. These are techniques he can use for the rest of his life. I am so grateful that this class is being offered."
In conjunction with the Open House, TKBC is sponsoring a Food Drive for Manna, the local food bank. "The Buddha nature is compassion and we are asking the community to bring canned and dry goods to donate for our friends and neighbors in need."
The TKBC Open House is an opportunity to visit a Buddhist Center and see what it is all about. Kadam Rebecca Gauthier will teach a free two-hour meditation workshop and there will be a full day of activities, including a magic show for the kids and a vegetarian potluck.
