Film Screens for Buyers at AFM November 2; TriCoast in Booth #810 at Loew's Producers Look Ahead to International Debut at Oaxaca FilmFest November 9 and 13 Feature-Length Documentary Chronicles One Woman's Triumph Over One Man's Lies.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) November 02, 2012 - TriCoast Worldwide has announced it has acquired worldwide rights to YaVaughnie Wilkins' documentary film THE GLAMOROUS LIE. The feature documentary, which chronicles the life of Wilkins and her eight and a half year relationship with Infor CEO, former Oracle executive and Obama economic advisor Charles E. Phillips, Jr. The documentary made its world premiere at the Harlem International Film Festival September 20, winning the Audience Award for a documentary http://www.harlemfilmfestival.com.
"We at TriCoast Worldwide are pleased and excited to be representing this unique and enthralling true story. The initial buyer reaction has been fantastic and we will be closing deals at AFM . YaVaughnie Wilkins has a very unique and powerful point of view that she has translated into a very compelling film," said Strath Hamilton, CEO of TriCoast Worldwide. TriCoast is located in booth number #810 in the Loews Hotel at AFM 2012. They are presenting the film-re-edited and with new, never-before seen footage--to buyers at a screening Friday, November 2 at 1:00PM at the AMC Santa Monica 3.
"I am delighted to have TriCoast represent THE GLAMOROUS LIE," said WIlkins. They were passionate about the film since they first saw it. I am sure their experience and enthusiasm will combine to bring us success in the marketplace, and we look forward to working with them on a successful worldwide sales and distribution effort for the film."
Since its debut at Harlem, THE GLAMOROUS LIE has been buffeted by Phillips' lawyers efforts to quash festival screenings of the film. Vegas CineFest, Salt Lake City Film Festival and Docufest Atlanta cancelled scheduled screenings of the film, in official selection at each festival, under pressure from aggressive legal threats by Phillips' lawyers.
Unbowed, however, on October 13 and 14, respectively, the Bel-Air Film Festival and the LA Femme International Film Festival defied the legal threats and screened the film. LA Femme International Film Festival director Leslie LaPage cited First Amendment rights to defy the threats from Phillips. "The First Amendment has long protected documentary films such as 'The Glamorous Lie,'" said LaPage. "If we allow people to bully us out of what is our right in this country, then what did we fight for and what do we continue to fight for?" At Bel-Air, UCLA caved in at the last minute to pressure from Phillips' lawyers and denied use of its facilities. Bel-Air screened the film successfully at the nearby Soho House, and bused ticket holders and judges to the new location and back. The festival's support was a bellwether for the film. At the award ceremony THE GLAMOROUS LIE took home both the Audience and Jury Awards for Best Documentary.
After AFM, THE GLAMOROUS LIE will make its international debut, screening November 9 and 13 at Third Annual Oaxaca FilmFest. http://www.oaxacafilmfest.com. The don't intend to back down from their commitment to screen the film. "Game is on…we are playing your film," said Oaxaca Filmfest's Ramiz Adeeb Azar. Screenings are Friday, November 9 and Tuesday, November 13 in the colonial city of Oaxaca, Mexico. For more information and to purchase tickets please visit: http://www.oaxacafilmfest.com.
THE GLAMOROUS LIE tells a story that would make for a fantastic fictional drama: high-placed boyfriend caught cheating; scorned girlfriend seeks very public acknowledgement. Billboards throughout the country showing a very literal picture of couple, with the message "you are my soul mate forever" posted larger than life over the streets of New York, Atlanta and Silicon Valley. But this was no fictional drama: it was, and it is, real.
Wilkins and Phillips' break-up played out in newspaper and television outlets around the world, but it was always characterized as a story of the wrath of a woman scorned and the height to which she had gone to call out her cheating boyfriend. But that was only part of the story. The public knew little about Wilkins, the woman behind the billboards, and less still about how far Phillips would go to cover up the truth about their relationship. THE GLAMOROUS LIE tells Wilkins' account of the years leading up to, during and after the relationship.
THE GLAMOROUS LIE both sets up the drama of the relationship with Phillips and follows Wilkins many months after the infamous billboard incident as she tries to move on with her life, starting her home products business ReJuvenescence and other businesses while she continues to struggle with her troubled past. http://www.getrejuvenescence.com.
Since the film originally wrapped in October 2011, Wilkins, family members, friends, businesses associates and even casual past acquaintances remained victims of ongoing surveillance and intimidation. The original director absconded with the film footage, which ended up in the hands of Phillips. Combined with the threats surrounding the Festivals, Wilkins and TriCoast have re-edited the film, the new version of which will make its debut at AFM. So while Wilkins has moved on with her life, another chapter of THE GLAMOROUS LIE is being written.
