- San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) August 13, 2010 - The Dean of Harvard College, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, the Governor of the State of Indiana and two Tri-City Christian Seniors. At first glance it is difficult to find a common thread, yet they all share one thing --- all are finalists with the National Merit Scholarship program (NMS).
Begun in 1955, the NMS has recognized 3 million students and provided over 335,000 scholarships worth more than $1.3 billion. For over 50 years the organization's goals have remained constant:
* to recognize and honor academically endowed U.S. high school students;
* to encourage increased support for their education; and
* to provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships.
Scholarship consideration is initiated by being a "high scorer" on the national PSAT test. Each year approximately 1.5 million students are eligible for program consideration. This year, Daniel Berrier and Elisabeth Purdy (Class of 2011) are numbered among the select few (less than 5,000) US high school students counted as a semi-finalist for a National Merit scholarship.

Hoping to become a filmmaker after college, Daniel (GPA: 3.99) scored in the 97th percentile nationally with his PSAT score. Daniels advice to fellow students is to give it their all, and "…try their hardest in everything they do." Winning the scholarship would provide Daniel with more money to attend college, which helps positively validate the sacrifices he's made in order to maintain his noteworthy GPA.
Elisabeth (GPA: 5.0) credits Tri-City's challenging classes, like AP Language, as a key preparation step in helping her gain her very impressive national PSAT ranking - 99th percentile. Planning to take a full load of AP classes her Senior year, attend an East Coast College and graduate from law school, Elisabeth's goals are clearly focused. When asked what direction she'd offer other students wishing to follow a path of academic excellence Elisabeth advises "…always ask for God's help and give him the glory-- he has helped me get through many stressful times when I would have utterly failed without his strength and guidance.
Tri-City Christian School is honored to have these two top scholars in the Class of 2011. Elisabeth and Daniel are counted in the highest 1 percent of high school students in America. To be considered as a finalist these students have maintained an outstanding academic record throughout high school, and have been endorsed and recommended by Mr. Gilbert. Their efforts will continue as they will need to earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier excellent performance on the PSAT. If selected as a semifinalist, Mr. Gilbert will submit a detailed scholarship application which includes their respective student essay and information about their participation and leadership in school and community activities.
