Touchstone Health (@touchstoneh) Introduces Wii Bowling Tournament In Fall 2010
Seniors in Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island to Compete in Virtual Gaming Competition.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) July 08, 2010 - Seniors throughout the New York City metropolitan area will do battle on the lanes this fall - without ever touching a real bowling bowl.
The Touchstone Health Wii Bowling Tournament gives senior citizens the chance to compete against their peers while promoting exercise and healthy living. Senior centers enrolled in the health and fitness program will form teams and hold practices in July and August. The Nintendo Wii bowling tournament bracket itself is scheduled to run for eight weeks beginning in September 2010. Wii bowling teams will compete first within their respective senior centers, with winners moving on to borough championships in October 2010.
Touchstone Health, a Medicare Advantage company in New York, will donate Wii consoles to the participating senior citizen centers in each of the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Touchstone Health community representatives will work senior centers on Wii bowling tournament regulations, scheduling, sign up and monitoring the virtual competition. Similar Wii bowling events will also be held simultaneously at four senior centers in New York's Broome and Onondaga counties.
Throughout July and August 2010, the senior and community centers will be able to use their new Nintendo Wii consoles for practice or general entertainment before the competition begins in the fall. Active seniors who chose to participate are encouraged to form two-person teams in preparation of the tournament. Qualifying rounds will begin in September to determine the best team at each senior center. The winning team will advance to the head-to-head competition at their borough championship.
"We want to give seniors the opportunity to participate in a fun and motivating challenge that promotes physical activity," said Dr. Roger London, Chief Medical Officer at Touchstone Health. "We encourage all seniors at the centers to take part, as the Wii game allows participation from seated or standing positions."
Wii bowling simulates the actual sport and follows the same rules, with players standing or sitting in front of a screen that appears as a bowling lane. Players set up their shot and then mimic the motion of throwing a bowling ball with the remote. Scoring is similar to real bowling and is tabulated automatically by the Wii system.
