Total UK Games Market in 2011: £3.6bn
The first in a line of reports on consumer spending for games. First up is the UK.
- (1888PressRelease) July 06, 2011 - AMSTERDAM - A fresh report by Newzoo, the international games market research specialist, estimates that consumer spending on games in the UK in 2011 will total £3.6 billion, slightly lower than 2010's £3.7bn. In 2012, Newzoo predicts a modest 2% growth of the total UK games market, as online and mobile games continue to increase their share of the total market. Console games spending stabilizes, similar to the developments in the US. The results depicted in the infograph, are based on analysis of high-level data from the UK National Gamers Surveys over the last three years. Mobile, online and downloaded games will capture almost half of UK consumer spending in terms of money and more than two-thirds in terms of time.

The full 2011 Games Market Revenue Report contains revenue breakdowns for the years 2009 to 2012 amongst the various game platforms, as well as the evolution of the total number of players and payers. In summary, anticipated strong growth in Social and MMO gaming (>40%) as well as Digital Distribution (+11%) in 2011 will not fully compensate the decrease in spending on Console Games (-11%) and boxed PC/Mac games (-10%). Spending on Mobile games (+6%) and online Casual Game destinations (+4%) are expected to show continued steady growth.
Peter Warman, CEO and co-founder of Newzoo, comments:
"Compared to the US, the UK shows a more traditional divide of money spent by consumers, with 56% spent on console and boxed PC/Mac games, whereas in the US, this figure has dropped to 45%. No other country surveyed shows such a significant difference between time and money spent. For instance, in the UK, online and mobile gaming takes 60% of time but only 35% of money. We expect the free-to-play business models on all platforms, including consoles, to not only push the UK market back to growth but also decrease the current gap between time and money spent."
The report is focused on six Western countries but also includes 2011 estimates for Brazil, Mexico, Russia and Spain. The report will be available for purchase as of July 5th 2011 at a price of $950 USD via www.newzoo.com. Alternatively, Newzoo offers interactive online access to the full dataset involving more than 200 topics on twelve countries.
On emerging markets Peter adds: "Free-to-play business models and mobile gaming are seriously opening up emerging markets. Countries where time and money spent across platforms are divided in an almost equal manner. In this respect they might be ahead of Western markets. It is exciting to finally see some concrete numbers on these countries, now we have extended our portfolio to twelve countries spread across the globe. It fits well with our ambition to provide the total picture, in terms of business models and global coverage."
Infographs on ten countries
Last week, Newzoo released an infograph on the US games market. Over the next couple of weeks, Newzoo will release similar data and infographs for other countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico and Russia. These will be made available as high resolution downloads from the company's website, as well as from the sponsor of the UK National Gamers Survey, Gate2Shop: http://www.g2s.com/survey-info
Says Yuval Ziv, COO of Gate2Shop: "The games industry continues to find new and interesting ways to grow. For us this means the chance to continue developing our global ecommerce platform, inventing new and interesting ways to be an integral part of online games payments in the future. Our decision to support the games industry and help vendors monetize their games has been confirmed once again."
