So, how do personal fabricators work? A personal fabricator (PF) turns bits into atoms. It creates material objects from designs that are fed into a fabricator as a CAD (computer aided design) model. A stock material then builds its physical instance. The most common of these tools are CNC (computer-numeric controlled) mills, 3D printers, and laser cutters. Whereas a 3D printer cost over $45,000 in 2001, you can now get one from between $1000 and $10,000.
