The Cheltenham Festival is almost upon us and this year the challenge between Ireland and England will have a new twist.
While the gap between Ireland and English trained winners might be tight, it would be unthinkable if the majority of the men riding them were not Irish. Last year around 80% of the Cheltenham Festival Races were won by Irish born jockeys and following this dominance they are now ready to take on their UK counterparts in a Cheltenham tipping challenge.
Two of Ireland's finest, twenty time Festival winner, Barry Geraghty and Grand National winner Jason Maguire will take on the England's top duo of Richard Johnson and Robert ' Choc' Thornton in the inaugural Fatjockey.com jockey tips challenge. Each jockey have selected five £20 bets on races during Festival week to compete in the challenge and they are eagerly waiting the off.
The jockeys selections have thrown up some interesting tips and range from 2/1 right up to a very interesting 33/1 tip from the seventeen time Cheltenham Festival winner, Richard Johnson.
Barry Geraghty was also on hand to explain more:
"The lads at Fatjockey asked me if I would come on-board to do a bit of tipping on their site. They were the ones who came up with the Ireland versus England challenge for Cheltenham. It should be a bit of crack. Hopefully myself and Jason can find a few more value tips than Choc and Richard."
Laughing when asked whether it was a good career move to have an association with "Fat Jockey" Barry said:
"I wondered about that myself. There was a time that I used to go into Jessica Harrington's yard and she would say "Look, here comes big fat Barry". Thankfully my weight is good now, so I am pretty relaxed about that! "
Asked about his tips Barry said "I didn't put in Sprinter Sacre. I absolutely love the horse - he could be the best I have ever ridden. I just didn't think I could put up an even money shot as a tip. I gave them my picks and then they told me about the 2/1 special. "
