Timarpur & Civil Lines Puja Samity Completes 100 Glorious Years
Delhi's 2nd oldest Durga puja samity completes 100 glorious years.
- (1888PressRelease) September 21, 2013 - New Delhi - In a world where so much is happening with societies, establishments giving way to the new, a Puja Samity tucked away in the North of Delhi will welcome the centenary celebrations of the foundation of the Samity this October.
Timarpur & Civil Lines Puja Samity (TPCLPS) was formally established in 1914 after the shifting of the capital of India from Kolkata to Delhi. The area had a considerable population of Indians serving in the then British Government (India was a colony of the British at the time). Moving to Kolkata to celebrate the Durga Puja was always not viable for the babus and with the then Secretariat close by, it was therefore logical for the first few volunteers and office bearers to gather and form a Puja Samity to celebrate Sharodutsav, the worship of Goddess Durga and the victory of good over evil.
Mr. Samit Kumar Brahmo, President, Timarpur & Civil Lines Puja Samity,(TPCLPS), said,'' It is indeed a very proud occasion for all to be witness to this historic year for the Samity, something that has become an integral part of the cultural landscape of Delhi, much like the Durga Puja festivities in Bengal or other parts of the country, or perhaps wherever it is celebrated in the rest of the World. The Samity has seen numerous ups and downs through the last century, the two ghastly world wars, drought, famine, partition and several other difficult times down the decades, but has always managed to stand the test of time because of the unwavering faith of volunteers irrespective of cast, creed or religion.''
During the last 99 years, on several occasions, the Puja Samity passed through hard phases of financial and administrative crises mainly due to lack of funds and active human resources. On several occasions, conditions became so precarious that the puja was on the verge of a premature end.
Mr. Joy Mukherjee, General Secretary, TPCLPS opines, '' It is indeed a privilege to be associated with the centenary celebrations. The Puja samity has grown steadily through the past century, despite a transient volunteer base in the area and is a testimony to the spirit of goodness in society, something that has not changed in all these years and will hopefully be upheld for centuries to come.''
''As a run up to the centenary year celebrations, we have been actively involved in reaching out to various identities, individuals, organisations, sponsors and corporate to come and be a part of this milestone year. The plethora of cultural activities and programs lined up for this year's celebrations will be representative, not only of the Bengal and the cultural fabric of the society in the yesteryears, but also a dynamic 21st century country of today. We are very happy to share that despite all situations, TPCLPS has always embraced the old with the new. We welcome all to the Sharod Utsav celebrations 2013, '' said Mr Sukhangshu Chatterjee, Cultural Secretary of the puja samity.
