TiEcon 2011 Announces Keynote Speaker, Sal Khan
Khan to Discuss RE-Inventing Education by RE-Thinking Access to Knowledge at TiEcon 2011.
- (1888PressRelease) March 26, 2011 - SANTA CLARA, CA -- TiE Silicon Valley announced today that Sal Khan, Founder of the Khan Academy, will keynote the "Breakthrough Thinkers" series at TiEcon, the world's largest conference for entrepreneurs. TiEcon will take place at the Santa Clara Convention Center, May 13-14. Each year, the conference brings together a diverse and dynamic group of leaders from business, technology, venture capital, and media for two days of education, inspiration, and networking.
"At the Khan Academy, the mission is to improve education by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. TiE also embraces the mission of education, continually creating programs that educate and inspire entrepreneurs globally," says Vish Mishra, President of TiE Silicon Valley. "We are pleased that Sal Khan, such a young and inspiring entrepreneur, will be joining us for TiEcon this year," he continued.
Khan holds degrees in mathematics, electrical engineering and computer science from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He started the Khan Academy after he began tutoring his cousins online, and realized the need to spread knowledge on a larger scale. From a few algebra videos on YouTube in 2006, to what is now 2,100 videos and a library of exercises in mathematics, science, history (and expanding), the Khan Academy has become a global success, attracting users of all ages.
"I teach the way that I wish I was taught. The lectures are coming from me, an actual human being who is fascinated by the world around him," says Khan.
Khan has been praised for his teaching methods by Bill Gates, who has said "What Sal Khan has done is amazing. He's taken all this material and broken them down into little 12 minute lectures. I use it myself to remind myself of things [and] my children use it." The Khan Academy received the Microsoft Tech Award for education in 2009. With a long list of supporters, including Google and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Khan Foundation continues to grow and improve global access to quality education.
