Labels and studios are just huge advertising and promotion outfits and to get their attention you have to show them you and your product are worth their time. The only way to do that is to promote your own product until it gets big enough to be worth the time of the majors. Once they do that they will invest the money it takes for you. Consumers respond to popularity. People want to like what everyone else likes. By building a continuous buzz, word spreads quickly. This is especially true on the Internet and is also especially important. Today's consumers take the majority of their news and cues from broadcast and Internet media.
Some companies focus on building social network friend numbers and getting artists in position to give music away on podsafe music and mentions by indie music bloggers. This is the same process the majors use. In the end it is lacking though because there is no advertising or coaching on where to music to gain the most exposure.
