ThinkMarketing Prepare To Celebrate Burn's Night In Edinburgh

Top Quote As we approach the end of January and hopefully the beginning of the end of winter, here in Scotland the 25th January has a special significance: Burn's Night. This is usually marked by a supper as a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) January 31, 2012 - This meal involves several traditions, the most famous of which is eating haggis. Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'pluck' (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours (although these days it tends to be cooked in a casing). This is usually accompanied by neeps and tatties.

Many of those at ThinkMarketing are planning to celebrate with this traditional meal on the day. 'People hear what haggis is and think it must be disgusting' stated a source from ThinkMarketing's Edinburgh office, 'but it is actually really good. My friends and I tend to have a traditional one and then make a vegetarian version ourselves'.

This is all to mark the birthday of Robert Burns (25 January 1759 - 21 July 1796), also known as the Bard. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide as such. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although he also wrote in English. On Burn's Night some of his poetry is traditionally recited, such as 'Address to the Haggis'. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism. Celebration of his life and work became almost a national charismatic cult during the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 2009 Robert Burns was voted by the Scottish public as being the Greatest Scot. His most well-known work is probably Auld Lang Syne, sung at New Year. 'He is a national icon and Burn's Night is a fun way to celebrate his achievements with some food, friends and a dram' said a source from ThinkMarketing.
