Theater Veterans Produce Radio Theater at the Historic Ybor Square May 17th

United by a love of theater, two veteran performers return to the stage with the East Coast Golden Age Theater. End Quote

Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) April 30, 2014 - On Saturday the 17th of May, starting at 7pm, guests will be treated to an old-style radio theater production of L. Ron Hubbard's classic modern fantasy "The Last Drop." It is a humorous tale about a New York bartender who received a special potion from Borneo which can make people grow or shrink in size when they drink it. When the potion is used on some unfriendly mobsters, the results are comic and unexpected.

The performance, which includes refreshments, will be held in the chapel of the Church of Scientology of Tampa, located in the historic Ybor Square, located at 1300 East 8th Avenue. Doors open at 6:30.

The performance stars Dylan Cefail, Eric Cefail and Nathaniel Barragan. Joanie Sigal, the Producer of the East Coast Golden Age Theater will be narrating. Kathy Sweigart will be directing.

Sigal help to found the theater three years ago. Sweigart joined the company shortly after. They both bring years of theatrical experience to the East Coast Golden Age Theater.

Sigal majored in theater at the University of Hawaii and has had roles in shows like "The Fantastiks", "West Side Story", "Cinderella" and "Steel Magnolias." She has performed on cruise ships and in nightclubs throughout the US, Mediterranean and Caribbean.

About her experience with the Golden Age Theater, Sigal said "I love to perform and wanted an outlet to display some of my own talent. I generally narrate and I love to tell the stories. Also these stories appeal to all ages and it is my belief that kids need to read more and watch TV or play video games less. If we can inspire young people to read, that's exciting."

Sweigart has also had her share on both sides of the footlights as an actor and as a director. "I won awards in Reader's Theater Competitions - which is what we do with Mr. Hubbard's stories for the Theater. I also wrote, produced and directed my own shows and later worked as an assistant director. I love the challenges of being a part of a theater troupe," said Sweigart.

Together, Sigal and Sweigart have produced more than 20 shows in the last three years. Recently, the format of the show was changed to incorporate elements from old-time radio theater.

"I love radio stories," said Sweigart. "This format takes us back to a simpler, earlier point in time -- it is nostalgic."

"We wanted to get back more to the way the stories would have been performed when they were written in the 30s and 40s," added Sigal. "Since Mr. Hubbard was so descriptive in his writing, they lend themselves to the audience creating the scene in their imagination, and the radio theater format allows them to do this."

Guests will have a chance to see this for themselves at the show on the 17th.

"Ybor Square was the first brick cigar factory in the United States. Because of this, it has a very special place in the history of Tampa," added Mimi Kintzel the Community Affairs Director, "to have the East Coast Golden Age Theater back for another show is fantastic."
