The Wedding Consultant Returns For The 2011 Philly Fringe At The Walnut Street Theater
Eric Singel's Celebrated One-Man Show is Back By Popular Demand at America's Longest-Running Theater.
- Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) August 16, 2011 - The Wedding Consultant, South Philly actor/playwright Eric Singel's one-man comedy about the behind-the-scenes antics at a gay wedding, returns to the 2011 Philly Fringe Festival in an all-new production directed by Walnut Street Theater instructor, Jose Aviles, at the Walnut Street Theatre Independence Studio on 3, beginning on Friday, September 2 at 8PM.
The Wedding Consultant was originally produced as part of the 2007 Philadelphia New Play Festival. "There's even a moral to this funny, way-gay play," declared The Philadelphia Inquirer, "[which is] an entertaining vehicle for Singel's talent." The City Paper called it "an energetic, inspired performance" and "big-hearted good fun that doesn't preach," while Variety deemed it "the most engaging entertainment [of the Festival.]"
Eric Singel is a seasoned performer who has been entertaining people on stages throughout the Greater Philadelphia area for the better part of two decades. He has most recently been writing for and performing with the WaitStaff, Philadelphia's premiere sketch comedy troupe. The Wedding Consultant originated as a 15-minute monologue, which won a coveted position in a Boston festival of writers performing their own solo works before being expanded into a full-length piece.
"I wanted to write a piece about marriage equality that was funny and didn't 'preach to the choir'," says Singel, "and it occurred to me that marriage is one thing, but weddings are another. Most formal weddings are theatrical, and farcical, and absurd, and why would a gay wedding be any different?" This sentiment is echoed by Iris Holcombe, the titular Wedding Consultant, who ultimately saves the day while repeatedly saying, "One wedding is just like another when you get right down to it."
Of course, this particular wedding might be just a little different than most. The best man just arrested the mother of the groom, the mother of the other groom is expecting to meet a bride, the lesbians are having anger management issues, and no one can find the groom. Or the other groom. Fortunately, Iris Holcombe, Wedding Consultant, is on hand to see to it that this wedding is unique, just like everybody else's.
