For years consumers have been disappointed with their spa covers failing prematurely due to water absorption. Abracadabra Hot Tub Covers & Spa Covers is now addressing this problem by using a 6mil polyethylene vapor barrier for sealing their spa covers foam cores. This vapor barrier is twice the thickness of the current industry standard and will help to add years of life to the average hot tub cover. In addition to this thicker vapor barrier, they also offer an option of adding a second layer of 6mil polyethylene vapor barrier.
The foam a hot tub covers cores are made of is Expanded Polystyrene. Expanded Polystyrene is made of small plastic beads that are expanded with steam, then dried and "attached together" simply by compressing them. Although the individual "beads" are waterproof, water can saturate between the beads and impregnate the foam. This water impregnation reduces the insulating ability of a spa cover and adds greatly to it's weight.
To prevent water absorption, the foam cores are normally "sealed" in polyethylene. To date, polyethylene has been found to be the best material for this application. Unfortunately though, over time, the chemicals normally used in a hot tub will break down the polyethylene causing it to become porous and allow for moisture penetration.
