The Robert Shumake Foundation Challenges Detroit's Leaders To Give Big
Detroit Leadership Community receives a challenge to give big this holiday.
- Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) December 14, 2010 - 'Tis the season to give and the Motor City is poised to do it BIG! On Thursday, December 17, 2010, from 4-9pm, The Robert Shumake Foundation in partnership with Abayomi Community Development Corporation, [ACDC] is driving its annual leadership challenge with Detroit's Big Give where donations from the general public (individuals and local businesses) will be received by select local nonprofit organizations and churches. This year, the collected goods will be donated to and subsequently distributed by; Elmhurst Home, COTS, Emmanuel House Recovery Program, Solid Rock Assemblies of God, Life Changers and Co Organizer ACDC on behalf of New St. Mark Family Life Center. Detroit's Big Give will take place at the Northwest Activities Center at 18100 Meyers Road Detroit, MI 48235.
Detroit's Big Give will facilitate the give-away of donated food items (dry goods, canned goods, perishables (e.g., turkeys, milk, bread, eggs, cheese) and winter coats (new or gently used, dry-cleaned for adults, youth and infants) to benefit Detroit area individuals and families in need during the holiday season.
In spite of the dire state of the economic landscape, business leader and founder of Detroit's Big Give, Robert Shumake, is steadfast in his responsibility to his community. Shumake's philosophy behind the "Leadership Challenge" is built on compelling local leaders and corporations from all over to come together and unite to help those less fortunate; especially those in their own backyard..
"Detroit has always been known for making records, it's time for the city to be recognized for breaking records...for giving!" says Shumake. "As business leaders, we can't always wait for big corporations to give, it's up to us to make an impact on our own communities," added Shumake.
With the help of countless local business professional, churches and volunteers, last year's 'Big Give' accomplished a great feat with little media attention. The Shumake Foundation collected over 22,000 pounds, [4 semi truckloads], of books, shoes, clothing, coats and medical equipment, helping thousands of people in the Detroit metropolitan area and abroad. The coats and outerwear were donated to Greater Grace Temple Church in Detroit. All other items were packed and shipped to the town of Sosua in the Dominican Republic, where the community was desperate for aid.
Each year the Robert Shumake Foundation selects organizations to partner with or to contribute to that may not receive the exposure it deserves for the good work they do. In years past, Detroit's Big Give partnered with organizations such as Life Changers and COTS; and has donated to organizations such as the Salvation Army, Children's Hospital, Looking For My Sister, Toys For Tots and more.
2010 Detroit Big Give Partner and Abayomi CDC Board Chair, Natalie King states; " It is an honor for Abayomi CDC to team with The Robert Shumake Foundation to help so many of our neighbors that are truly in need; especially during the holiday season. Detroit's Big Give will assist our organization in it's goal to help the under served communities of Detroit.
