Biography and Description of Books:
Mike Martin was born in Henryetta , Oklahoma . Following his family's move to the central San Joaquin Valley in the early 1950s, he graduated from Cal State University at Fresno with B.A and M.A degrees in business administration and then completed a doctorate in education at The University of Northern Colorado. After that, he embarked on an over 30-year career in community college teaching and administration.
One Dust Bowl Family's Story is a multimedia presentation based on books Mike has written about two small towns and schools that once existed in rural Oklahoma . Three generations of his family departed from there during the 1930's and 1940's to become farm laborers in the central San Joaquin Valley . In retirement Mike's interests include writing about some of the communities in the Midwest that came about shortly after the land in the Oklahoma Indian Territory became available for settlement by outsiders. He also discusses what became of the settlers of these legendary town sites throughout history.
Not only Mike's descendents, but many others ended up migrating to California during the years of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. He writes about their migrant experience in his two books, "My Indian Territory School" and "Bryant: A Creek Indian Nation Townsite," and his narrated presentations based his books have been well received on many occasions. He and his wife Ginny live in Visalia , California .
