The Local opens Paris office

- (1888PressRelease) February 04, 2013 - Online news publisher The Local has opened an office in Paris, after a yearlong trial project convinced the company to invest in a local editorial team.
"We've been running thelocal.fr in beta for a while now but having a local presence with local journalists will transform the site. Our coverage of France's news will be comprehensive and original," said The Local's CEO Paul Rapacioli.
The team in Paris will be led by editor Ben McPartland, who previously worked at France24. "Everyone has a relationship with France. Whether it's about the food, literature, art, film or sport, everyone has an opinion. Our job is to inform these opinions with a steady flow of engaging, balanced reporting about what's going on in France," said editor of thelocal.fr, Ben McPartland.
CEO Paul Rapacioli said that the company sees its physical presence in France as an important milestone on the road to covering Europe's news in English.
"Daily news is the glue of our society. It defines the issues we care about and how we respond to them as a community. Since France is at the heart of the complex community of Europe our team in Paris has a great responsibility," he said.
The Local started in 2004 as a weekly summary of Swedish news sent to twelve foreigners in Stockholm and quickly grew to be the biggest Englishlanguage news site in Scandinavia. In 2008 the company opened its Berlin office and began reporting from Germany. Over 2.5 million people now visit The Local's Swedish, German and Swiss sites each month. But the company believes that global interest in France as a place to live, visit or admire from afar will make thelocal.fr the most popular site yet.
"Judging by the way my colleagues at The Local are all finding reasons to visit our Paris office, I'd say there will be a lot of interest in our French edition," said Paul Rapacioli.
