The Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (OSMTH) has released: The Knights Templar: From History to the Twenty-First Century Mission: Nine Hundred Years Since the Foundation of the Poor Knights of Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem, a historical account of the Knights Templar in both soft cover and e-book.
- (1888PressRelease) May 24, 2017 - The purpose of this scholarly work is to celebrate the 900th Anniversary of the founding of the Knights Templar, the Poor Knights of Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem. This book is the first to study the roots of the 19th century Neo-Templars using the scientific method.
The OSMTH History and Archives Committee should be commended for their outstanding efforts for getting this book to publication, including the Chairman of the Committee Scott Simon (GP USA) and the History Division Chief of the Committee Adjunct Professor Pasi Pöllänen, M.D., Dr.med.sci., Ph.D. (GP Finland). Also on the committee are LTC Thomas Curtis (GP USA and DGC), Chevalier David Wagemans (GP Belgium and Deputy Chancellor General), Professor Melinda Richards, Ph.D. (GP USA), Field Bishop, Adjunct Professor Pekka Särkiö, Dr. Theol. (GP Finland), and Chevaleresse Veronica Ann Zabala-Aliberto (GP USA). The committee expressed its deep appreciation for the extensive contribution of the late Professor Ilkka Välimäki, M.D., Dr.med.sci (GP Finland). Brother Välimäki was a past Grand Prior of Finland and an avid supporter of this project and the committee expressed gratitude for his constant assistance and inspiration throughout the years in making the project a reality.
According to Chevalier Dale J. Starkes, GOTJ, Chancellor, OSMTH, "As we move forward toward the 900th Anniversary Celebration for the Order, I am pleased to announce that our Templar organization was the first to publish a book as part of the 900th Anniversary celebration and I believe it will help to distinguish us from other Templar entities worldwide and is an accomplishment we can all be proud of." He continues, "This book celebrates not only the ancient history of our order, but also the modern contribution of our past and present leadership."
Professor Melinda Richards writes, "As will be shown in this book, the spirit of chivalry, of being of service to humankind, and of a willingness to provide protection and support to those in need has never truly died. It lives on in the men and women who pledge themselves to lives of service to others. It lives on in those who choose to carry on in the spirit of those ancient knights; to don the mantle and offer themselves in service to protect the Pilgrim, to provide help wherever needed, and to work in Christian charity on behalf of a broken world . . . this is the legacy of the Order in the Modern Era."
With over 2,000 footnotes and references, everyone from the ardent scholar to the inquisitive individual will have plenty of research material to study on the historical beginnings of the Knights Templar. The reader will also see where the legacy of the Knights has brought the Order in today's world and what contributions it brings to the world; and how the Order shapes the lives of those who choose to live a chivalric way of life to help those in need. One also gets a glimpse on how the Order has been shaped due in no small measure to the trials and tribulations of those who came before us. It is only through their strength, courage, and faith as their guides that they blazed a way for millions to follow and aspire to be.
As members of the Order around the world and others prepare for the 900th Anniversary Celebration of the Knights Templar, let us all seek to inspire others to have a deeper understanding of the history of those Knights who gave the ultimate sacrifice and shaped the world we know today. For future generations to never stop searching for and inquiring about the true history of those who still light the fire of imagination and enduring desire to become chivalric men and women, to uphold truth and justice, and to help all those in need.
