"Nunsense is good old-fashioned comedy at its best: it is quick paced, generally raucous, occasionally touching and totally wonderful." That's what Back Stage had to say about the musical, making it a perfect fit for IND! Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of "Grease." The musical includes something for everyone-singing, dancing, an audience quiz-as well as surprises at every turn.
The holy but hilarious cast of characters includes:
- Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer, played by Sabriaya Shipley '14.
- Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices, played by Samantha Martin '12;
- A streetwise nun from Brooklyn, Sister Robert Anne, played by Samantha Yanaga '13;
- Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina, played by Brianna Dregier '14, and
- The delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head, played by Elizabeth Travis '12.
Then there are the famed The Little Sisters of Hoboken played by Rachel Barnes '12, Samantha Boyd '15, Grace Darrah '15, Madison Ehrenreich '15, Elizabeth Hill '13, JacQuan Knox '14, Sofie Massa '14, Kayla Pahl '15, Gabriella Schoenbeck '15, Gretchen Selinksi '13, Moira Shannon '13, Sarah Stefanski '14, and B'Jion Wright '14.
Nunsense is directed by Mrs. Carolyn Buck, chairperson of IND's Theatre Arts Department. The music director is Mrs. Stacey Bilenki, IND's Coordinator of Alumnae Relations; the choreographer is Ms. Alexandra Bowden '06. Behind-the-scenes support is provided by production stage manager Caroline Zellhoffer '12, dance captain Sofie Massa '14, lighting specialist Brianna Simkins '12, scenery specialist Jennifer Staab '12, and IND's stagecraft class.
