The iaedp Foundation Wraps Up Symposium 2012 by Awarding Dr. Timothy Brewerton Honorary Certification for Career Excellence

  • (1888PressRelease) April 06, 2012 - CHARLESTON, S.C. - The iaedp Foundation wrapped up its 26th annual Symposium 2012 Sunday, March 25, in Charleston, S.C. This year's conference was attended by a record-breaking number of eating disorder professionals and experts who participated in an educational experience geared toward inspiring and sharing ideas to provide continued care and cures for those suffering from eating disorders. To close the weekend, the foundation recognized local professional, Timothy D. Brewerton, MD, DFAPA, FAED, DFAACAP, with The iaedp Foundation's prestigious Honorary CEDS (Certified Eating Disorders Specialist).

    Awarded by the iaedp Board of Directors and iaedp Certification Committee, Honorary Certification is given to individuals for their outstanding contribution to the field of eating disorders treatment.

    Dr. Brewerton is currently Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and has a private practice in the Charleston area. He also is a consultant for the Rosewood Center for Eating Disorders. His esteemed career included tenured professorship of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at MUSC in 2002 where he founded the MUSC Eating Disorders Program in 1987 and served as its Director from 1987-2001. Having served as medical consultant at the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center, Dr. Brewerton is triple board certified in general psychiatry, child/adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. He is a Distinguished Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Eating Disorders. He is past President of the Eating Disorders Research Society and the South Carolina Council for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

    He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Eating Disorders; the American Psychiatric Association Council on Children, Adolescents and Their Families; and My Sister's House, Inc., a shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence. He currently serves on the Assembly of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is President-elect of the South Carolina Psychiatric Association. Dr. Brewerton has also authored and published over 120 scientific articles and book chapters on various aspects of eating and related disorders, including their psychobiology, psychopharmacology, epidemiology, etiology and co-morbidity, and he has presented over 300 lectures, papers and workshops around the world on a variety of topics.
