Before the intranet came to be, organizations typically shared information through email and shared folders. Eventually, companies began to host internal webpages to share information which lead to the first intranet being created. In 1996, Frontier Technologies released the "Intranet Genie". This marked the beginning of a two-decade (and growing) long history of the intranet. In 1999, just three years after the Intranet Genie was released, Intranet Connections was born.
During this time, intranets grew and evolved rapidly. This was due to the fact that the World Wide Web was also rapidly expanding. In 2005, websites became more interactive. Soon after, intranets followed suit with functionality that allowed users to build webpages and create customized forms. All of this lead up to the Social Intranet, also known as Intranet 2.0.
