(1888PressRelease) December 15, 2012 - "KAMRA Vision is an amazing medical advance for the treatment of presbyopia," states Dr. Sheldon Herzig, Co-founder and Medical Director, Herzig Eye Institute "This breakthrough solution for reversing the effects of presbyopia consists of inserting the KAMRA™ inlay into the cornea."

The KAMRA inlay is a 3.8mm disc weighing less than a grain of salt that provides an improved range of focus for both near and intermediate vision without affecting distance vision significantly. The inlay is placed in the cornea after making a flap or small opening in the cornea with a laser. It may be necessary to combine it with LASIK but it can also be inserted in the cornea of patients who have previously had LASIK, PRK, RLE or cataract surgery and now have little or no reading vision.

The KAMRA Vision procedure takes 10-15 minutes and the inlay is placed only in the non-dominant eye to provide a permanent solution for the loss of reading vision. It works using the principle of small aperture pinhole optics, the same principle as a pinhole camera. It is not a lens and is not age dependent with the same inlay being used whether a person is 45 or 75.

ALTERNATIVES FOR PATIENTS WHO ARE NOT CANDIDATES FOR KAMRA VISION:

For patients with high myopia, thin corneas, signs of early cataract, corneal structural weakness, or severe dry eyes who are not candidates for KAMRA Vision, there are a number of options to correct their presbyopia.

MONOVISION:
Monovision means that one eye, usually the dominant eye, is corrected for distance vision and the non-dominant eye is corrected for reading. This was originally achieved with a monocle and more recently with a monovision contact lens. Surgically, monovision can be achieved with LASIK, PRK, inserting a lens into the eye without removing a person's natural lens (ICL), or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), exchanging the natural lens for an intraocular lens (IOL). With any of these surgical procedures one eye can be made to see clearly in the distance while the other eye is able to read. In almost all patients there is no awareness that the eyes are different making this a very successful approach.

MUTIFOCAL INTRAOCULAR LENSES:
The multifocal intraocular lens has been available for over 20 years. The quality of these lenses has improved greatly since the late 1980's providing excellent distance and reading vision in both eyes. Implanting a multifocal intraocular lens requires removing a person's natural lens either because it has become cloudy (cataract), or simply to eliminate glasses while the natural lens is still clear. This is known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). Quite often RLE is a safer and more precise procedure than laser vision correction with either LASIK or PRK. The lens that is used to replace the natural lens can either provide monovison, or if the lens is multifocal, distance and reading vision in both eyes. Another type of lens to restore reading is the accommodative lens.
