His second-in-command is a Synth, a synthetic human designed as a fighter pilot. After being involved in a crash and facing destruction due to being deemed defective, the captain recruited him for the crew, recognizing his secondary skill as a navigator.
These are just two members of the motley crew aboard the Gunboat Elisabeth as they embark on another cruise around the inner planets. While near Mercury, they discover signs of an alien virus present in a hyper-sleeping passenger.
