The Great American Apparel Diet Taps Into The Female Consumer's Current Psyche Regarding the Economy
The Great American Apparel Diet is tapping into the female psyche of consumerism and giving consumers a voice to say 'no' to the American way of buying unnecessary things. The diet is gaining momentum with over 300 active members, and the numbers are growing daily. The first wave of dieters are soon wrapping their one year time frame of no clothing purchases and reflect on their time on the diet.
- (1888PressRelease) August 21, 2010 - Seattle - In the past year over three hundred women from 12 countries around the world have signed up to be a part of a group called The Great American Apparel Diet-a club that is defined by shopping abstinence. What started as a fun idea on behalf of Seattle resident Sally Bjornsen, has blossomed into a bit of a movement that is chronicled daily on the official The Great American Apparel Diet blog. On the blog women share their feelings, thoughts, ideas and fears around going cold turkey on the apparel front. Sentiments such as "purchase regret," "shopping momentum" and a desire to focus on the soul versus the closet, are just a few of the topics that are discussed among the group. "It's like a virtual self-help group for people who want to cut back," says Stephanie Greco one of the bloggers. "No more gross consumption for me."
While many of the dieters consider the blog a place for support, Sally Bjornsen, TGAAD dieter, founder and marketing veteran sees it as a giant focus group. " What started out as a simple question…'Could you go a year without shopping,' posed to a few friends seems to be more complex and interesting to women all over the globe. It certainly ignites the conversation about consumerism, economy and identity. I am learning so much about how women see themselves and how they want to engage in the consumer culture given this 'new economy.' And it's not just about clothes."
News about TGAAD has spread quickly and now the members' number 300+ with membership is growing daily. Due to a great deal of interest in the past few months Bjornsen has decided to keep the blog going for one more year with the officinal "second round," to be completed on August 31st 2011. A maintenance page will go up on September 1st of this year where dieters who have completed the diet can blog about what it means to be shopping again. New dieters can jump on board at anytime they'd like, they determine their challenge whether that be one year or one month.
