Outdoor living… is a year-round adventure and although keeping cool is a preferred option today… Those days soon will be here for warming and enhancing the outdoor spaces with flair and for that your readers will be looking to the latest trend… artistic fire features! Artist John T. Unger has just the feature with an artistic and architectural twist.
- (1888PressRelease) July 03, 2012 - John T. Unger's Sculptural Firebowls have been lauded worldwide for their beauty, durability and design. His newest offering, The FlatPack Architectural Fire Feature, is a completely new vision of the perfect luxury fire feature. Decades of art and design experience and over a year of design, testing, prototyping and collaboration led to the creation of this stunning, stainless steel work of functional art. The Flatpack Fire Feature's patent-pending design assembles easily with no tools or hardware and can be up and running in minutes with its plug and play propane system. The focus of this new line is to create a catalog of fire features based on architectural design motifs to harmonize with the architectural style of homes.
"I've always loved architecture, and because these fire features are an extension of the home, I was inspired to base the first designs on architectural motifs from different styles and periods," said Unger. Future designs will reference other architectural motifs including Art Deco, Modernist, Prairie Style, and others." Unger's plan for the line is to eventually create designs to fit any period home as well as narrative panels and designs based on forms from natural history.
"Like my Sculptural Firebowls, the Flat Pack Architectural Fire Feature is first and foremost a beautiful sculpture designed to interact with the light and shadow of fire," said Unger. "But it is also a new direction. Unlike the standard oxidized patina of my recycled work, Flatpack Fire Features are laser cut from heavy-duty stainless steel, retain their original finish and are surface friendly for decks, patios or stonework." The thick stainless steel construction is resistant to corrosion enabling the fire features to last for generations in the out of doors including coastal installations.
The interior of the Fire Feature glows a warm orange while the exterior is backlit in silhouette. The sunburst of rays casts lively and beautiful shadows projected by dancing flames. This play of light and shadow, positive and negative space and projected imagery is reminiscent of another Victorian classic, the magic lantern. Even when not in use, the Fire Feature functions as gorgeous outdoor sculpture, harnessing the sun's passing to craft intricate shadows that slowly shift like the shadow of a sundial.
Solutions to a number of design opportunities encountered with Unger's hand-cut Sculptural Firebowls were incorporated into the Victorian Flat Pack Fire Feature. "As an artist, I wanted to expand on what I was capable
of creating on my own and put the tools of industry to the task of creating beauty," said Unger. "I believe a factory is like a symphony orchestra, a collection of skilled people with specialized tools who can bring great art into being if you give them a plan."
The Flatpack Fire Feature's patent-pending design assembles easily with no tools or hardware and can be up and running in minutes with its plug and play gas system. Installation, dismantling, moving or storage are equally simple and yet the clever interlocking design makes the Fire Feature exceptionally stable, easily passing the most rigorous tests. Once assembled, there is no seam or indication that the Fire Feature is not a solid piece. The design has been thoroughly tested to insure that it can be safely used on traditional or plastic wood decks without concern for combustion. The top of the Fire Feature has a beveled edge and slightly rounded corners.
The Flatpack Architectural Fire Feature ships ready for use with propane; although units can be special-ordered for use with natural gas at no additional cost. Included with each unit is everything needed for ease of use including a built-in automatic ignition burner with safety shut off, a regulator and hose. Gas connections between the LP regulator/hose, the valve and the burner orifice are fully assembled and leak tested before shipping. The control system provides flame supervision in wind or rain and consists of components listed to the appropriate ANSI/CAN standards.
When not in use, the Fire Feature functions as a gorgeous outdoor sculpture. Each Architectural Flatpack Fire Feature arrives signed by the artist via an engraved stainless steel plate. A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is mailed separately.
