- (1888PressRelease) April 17, 2015 - WASHINGTON, DC - On Monday, April 20th, 2015, the First Star Greater Washington Academy will hold a "Friendraiser" tribute to honor Deputy Mayor Brenda Donald for her long standing, deep commitment to helping at-risk and abused children and youth and their families.
The Greater Washington Academy (GWA) shares the Deputy Mayor's goal of increasing the number of foster youth who seek and attain higher education, thereby increasing their ability to obtain good jobs, personal well-being, career advancement, economic independence, and the ability to contribute to society as responsible citizens. GWA believes that by immersing our foster youth students in a culture of success and learning, they will be motivated and prepared to achieve greatness.
The Deputy Mayor, in her previous position as the director of the DC Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA), has been a staunch supporter of the GWA and is responsible for creating an environment at CFSA in which the City's safety net for abused and neglected children and youth and their families has been significantly strengthened. Through actions such as creation of the Well Being Administration and enhancement of the Office of Youth Empowerment, support services in the areas of education, domestic violence response, pathways to employment, mentoring/tutoring, and after care have been vastly strengthened. For these actions and many more, the GWA plans to present the Deputy Mayor with an award and honor her many accomplishments as the director of CFSA in being a champion of foster youth in the District.
