- (1888PressRelease) February 02, 2018 - Tears were shed and words of admiration spoken during the dedication ceremony of “The Dr. Thakker Clinic” at Desert Valley Hospital.
Hospital officials, staff and patients from Desert Valley Medical Group attended the private event on Friday for the late doctor Suman Thakker, who died unexpectedly nearly two weeks ago.
“Today we celebrate our dear friend, beloved colleague and esteemed physician, Dr. Suman Thakker,” said Dr. Prem Reddy, the CEO and president of Prime Healthcare Services. “His impact is evident by the overwhelming response we have received from his patients and the community.”
Thakker’s wife, Kirtida, and daughters, Jayini and Hiteshi, sat in the front row of the rheumatology suite and listened to Dr. Reddy as the crowd continued to assemble and pour out into the hallway at the medical facility in Victorville.
“We celebrate Dr. Thakker by dedicating the rheumatology suite in honor of his legacy,” Dr. Reddy said. “As of today, Friday, January 26th, 2018, Suite 103 will be known as ‘The Dr. Thakker Clinic.’ ”
During the event, Thakker’s staff, medical assistants Diane Lira, Audra Mason, Marlene Steele, Kristen Gonzalez and Elva Simpson, unveiled a photo and sign that read “The Dr. Thakker Clinic.”
Reddy’s wife, Dr. Venkamma Reddy, wept as she explained how Thakker cared deeply for his patients and everyone’s “aches and pains.”
“From head to toe, we learned rheumatology from him,” Dr. Venkamma Reddy said. “When we complained and patients complained, he listened to every complaint and never said, ‘no’ to anyone.”
Lira, who worked for Thakker for 14 years, said Thakker had an “unbridled passion” when it came to treating and caring for his patients.
“Not only did he participate in the care of all his patients, he also liked to conduct clinical trials and offered medications that weren’t even approved yet,” Lira said. “As far as his staff, he treated all of us like his family — like his daughters.”
Dozens of Thakker’s patients contacted the Daily Press to share their thoughts about the 69-year-old physician who began his career alongside Dr. Prem Reddy in 1986 as a primary care physician and was instrumental in the formation and growth of Desert Valley Medical Group.
“I miss Dr. Thakker so much and I cry over him every day,” Ronnie Patterson told the Daily Press. “His memorial was very lovely and I appreciate the honor of being invited to go.”
Thakker, who was born in Mandvi, India, graduated from Goa Medical College in 1972 and completed a residency at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.
During his 31-year career, Thakker’s name was on the local and national forefront as he spoke to general and professional audiences from coast to coast.
“You look at Dr. Thakker’s picture on the wall and you can almost hear him laughing,” Lira said. “He had an infectious smile and his love for people was heartfelt and genuine.”
Hundreds of people remembered Thakker during a service on Jan. 20 at Krishna Valley Temple & Cultural Center in Apple Valley.
