Big Shot Press title receives a presitgious Book of the Year Award. The Diet Joke: A Reprogramming Guide for Perpetual Consumers takes Honorable Mention in the Self Help category.
- San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) July 16, 2011 - The Diet Joke by local author Lisa Pedace has won Honorable Mention in the 2010 Book of the Year Awards in the Self Help category. The ForeWord Reviews awards program spotlights distinctive books from independent publishers. This year's winners were announced at a special program at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans on June 25, 2011.
The Diet Joke, Pedace's first book, takes a seriously funny look at the dieting industry, government dietary recommendations, and more. It won the 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Diet/Nutrition/Food category and has also been featured on the Dr. Laura radio show as a Recommended Book.
Pedace, who's also a comic and actress, says the way we eat and diet in this country is out-of-whack. "It's always all or nothing. We're either on a diet or we're off one. Meanwhile, the obesity rate keeps rising. Portions are out of control. Americans are more and more sedentary. How do we deal with it? With vanity sizing. Zero and double zero aren't sizes. They're roulette bets."
Pedace says The Diet Joke uses humor to encourage readers to avoid quick-fix weight-loss gimmicks and focus on making permanent lifestyle changes. "They say the first thing you lose when you go on a diet is your sense of humor. The Diet Joke helps you keep it."
