On Saturday September 15, 2012 during the opening week of the new Dallas City Performance Hall a specially crafted classic Jazz ensemble named the Dallas Jazz Collective will perform original music and jazz favorites. Texas Tenor Saxophonist Jason Davis will lead this fine set of musicians that include many well known regional favorites and also young lions of jazz.
- Dallas, TX (1888PressRelease) August 09, 2012 - The "Dallas Jazz Collective" is Clint Strong, Roger Boykin, George Anderson, Drew Phelps, James Gilyard, Michael Palma, Caleb McCampbell, Lamont Taylor, Lil Mike Mitchell, Andrew Griffith, Cadino Newman, Victor Cager, Candace Miller, Tatiana Mayfield, Aaron Irwinsky, Tony Baker, Mike Shields and Jason Davis. Representing the new and thriving young jazz sound will be "Dean Hill's Latest Project" (DLP) from Townview Magnet Center. This is a recipe for some great music and a one of a kind jazz experience for any live music lover. Music Director, Jason Davis says "Many question the relevance of a new venue and also the relevance of jazz music and this night of world class jazz in Dallas will answer that for those who attend and embrace the art."
The Show will cover early Deep Ellum Blues and jazz from all eras including references to how historic Texas born musicians have helped to shape jazz. This clearly can't be done in detail within a 2 hour concert however the respect for the Dallas Jazz Legacy will be represented well. The great traditions and sounds of jazz from the South Western United States have firm roots in Dallas and the Dallas Jazz Collective will highlight the great Texas soul jazz sound. All of the Musicians involved are active bandleaders of their own personal music ensembles outside of the specially crafted Jazz Collective. This concert is a rare opportunity to see some of the most prolific combinations of musical prowess that can be found anywhere in the world. From ages 17 to 71, the D.J.C. includes students, teacher and working professional musicians. It is a known fact that some of the best musicians on the planet live and work here in the DFW area and this night of Jazz at The City Performance Hall will be an exhibition of these talents.
The full weekend festivities begin on Thursday September 13, 2012 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Many activities and presentations will be happening throughout the weekend. The Jazz Collective will be on stage Saturday night @ 8:00 PM. Mark your calendar for September 15, 2012. The Dallas City Performance Hall is located at 2100 Ross Ave. Dallas, Texas 75210.
This venue gives local performing artist a chance to present music to people who are listening. There will be no forks hitting plates, no blenders mixing frozen beverages and no talking. This is an automatic upgrade for most musicians working in the DFW area. Jazz great Sonny Rollins says it best "I enjoy playing clubs. I still enjoy the closeness of the nightclub venue. However, after a certain period of time and after playing around some of the clubs in New York I felt that jazz should be presented in a more prestigious atmosphere."
Saturday's performance is funded by the City of Dallas and produced by Jason Davis Jazz. Jason Davis Jazz has a mission to empower musicians to become better leaders and embrace the beautiful opportunities that await them through collective work. Davis has been performing in Dallas since 1983 as a child prodigy classical clarinetist. His 21 piece jazz orchestra (Stage Band South) will not perform on the Saturday Night Jazz Concert but will be featured during a 30 minute set on the following Sunday at 2:00 PM. It is a truly collective experience that brings communities and cultures together to celebrate the hard work of those who fought for the 2006 bond election that lead to this beautiful facility. Major proceeds of this performance will be used to produce and present more high quality local music events. In the future Jason Davis Jazz plans to reach into other genres of music such as gospel and neo-soul to further highlight what he refers to as "The Dallas Sound".
It is almost impossible to create a headlining artist from such a great set of musicians. These musicians have performed with the best musicians of our time like Tony Bennet, Ella Fitzgerald, Della Reese, Tina Turner and many more. The featured youth combo under the direction of Dean Hill from Townview Magnet is a sneak peak at the shape of jazz to come. Dean Hill is a world renowned jazz educator and has taught award winning & internationally recognized musicians such as Roy Hargrove, Robert Searight, Braylon Lacy, Jason Davis and Keith Anderson. Jazz musicians have been ambassadors to the world with the music and love for creative expansion in mind. During the concert the second set will feature The Roger Boykin on several instruments. Mr. Boykin is the elder statesman and has advised Mr. Davis on how to make this event a success. The night will render familiar songs and new compositions from the full ensemble.
"I never thought that the music called jazz was ever meant to reach just a small group of people, or become a museum thing locked under glass like all other dead things that were once considered artistic…" Miles Davis, Jazz Great.
The Dallas Jazz Collective is a concept ensemble that will perform for the first time live at The City Performance Hall. Feel free to redistribute this publication.
