  • Jacksonville, FL (1888PressRelease) March 14, 2012 - In conjunction with its annual Garden Week March 13-17, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens has created a variety of interactive tools that invite visitors to engage with and explore the historic riverfront gardens like never before. Visitors can download podcasts, scan QR codes, dial a tour from their cell phones or log onto an interactive map. These new interactive tools for will be available year-round.

    From its pedigreed history and famous landscape architects to its collection of outdoor sculpture and abundance of flora, the Cummer Gardens have myriad stories to tell. These new interactive tools help visitors learn more about the entire Gardens, or delve deeper into areas of the Gardens that catch their fancy. The following three mobile device tours are available, either by downloading a podcast, scanning a QR code or simply dialing a telephone number:

    General Tour - an overview of the Gardens' history and design;

    Horticulture Tour - a more depth tour of the Gardens' horticulture; and

    Family Tour - geared to kids ages five to 12 to enjoy with their favorite adults or independently.

    Additionally, visitors can customize a tour by dialing numbers specific to any 12 different attractions in the Gardens, including the Upper Tier, Cummer Oak, Diana of the Hunt, Tea Garden, Azaleas, Wisteria Arbor, St. Johns River, Lower Lawn, Italian Fountain, Gargoyle, Italian Garden and Olmsted Garden. There's also an audio Touch Tour available for low-vision and blind visitors to enhance their experience of the gardens. The tour is downloaded on iPods available at the Museum's front desk and includes verbal descriptions that focus on aromas and touch.

    About the Cummer Gardens
    Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Cummer Gardens feature 1.5 acres of manicured grounds situated on Jacksonville's St. John's River. The unique example of early 20th century garden design features reflecting pools, fountains, arbors, antique ornaments and sculptures. The Cummer Gardens are home to the famous Cummer Oak, a towering oak with a canopy of more than 150 feet which, at 175- to 200-years-old, is estimated to be one of the oldest trees in Jacksonville. The Cummer's annual Garden Week, held in March, is a celebration of these manicured grounds, and offers many special events and programs.
