The Comedy Film, Freeloader - The Robin Hood Of The Homeless By Award-Winning Comedian Don Barnhart Begins Production
In an era of uncountable remakes, independent filmmaker and award-winning comedian Don Barnhart begins production on the original comedy film Freeloader.
- (1888PressRelease) September 10, 2011 - Freeloader will be the second feature film written, directed and starring award-winning comedian Don Barnhart Jr. It is set to begin filming in and around Las Vegas in April of 2012.
Barnhart received the 2010 Bob Hope Award for his dedication to producing and performing comedy shows for the troops worldwide and was inspired to write the film based on his relationships with so many service men and women returning home to the bad economy and housing slump.
The film takes place in Las Vegas where Guy Derek returns home from Afghanistan only to find that his wife has left him and his house is in foreclosure. Reacting poorly to the situation he begins to drink. After hitting bottom, Guy ends up living on the streets and in an effort to regain his life; he becomes the Robin Hood of the homeless finding his way back through comedy.
"I've always tried to use my humor to shine the light to sensitive subjects", stated Barnhart in a recent interview. Barnhart is currently on tour adding extra dates to his comedy and hypnosis shows to help fund the project. He is also a published author, certified hypnotist and graduate of the prestigious Second City Conservatory with numerous TV and Film credits.
Barnhart's producing partner and wife, Linda Vu are producing the film under their own production company, Don Barnhart Entertainment in order to keep creative control and Freeloader will be the second feature film under the DBE label. The production company has already made a name for themselves with numerous comedy specials including The Freedom of Speech Comedy Series, The Ice House 50th Anniversary Comedy Special and several stand up and instructional DVDs.
Taking an approach outside the Hollywood mainstream, Don Barnhart Entertainment is using several social media companies to help raise funds. Through Kickstarter and Facebook, fans can pre-order DVDs, Posters, the book, and even get a background or speaking part in the film. "We're doing everything we can to beat the bushes to help raise funds", added Linda Vu.
The film is schedule to begin shooting in April 2012 in and around Las Vegas, NV
There are very few Hollywood production companies backing indie films these days and is seems that the films that are being made are remakes. Already set for production are Footloose, Dirty Dancing and yet another remake of Spiderman.
Ironically, comedies seem to be the only original ideas that come to fruition and yet Hollywood still seems to look down on them. It's been proven that not only do comedies work they make money.
Look at the successes of Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow, Jamie Foxx, Robin Williams and Jim Carrey. The common denominators in each of these are stand up comedians turned filmmaker or actor. Except for a few wild cards, almost every Academy Award in the last decade for best film are independent features shot outside the limitless thinking and regurgitation of Hollywood remakes.
If this is any preview, then Don Barnhart's film Freeloader has a great chance to succeed.
