The Claxton-evans County Chick'n Pick'n Festival A Big Success
The Chick'n Pick'n Festival promotes the importance of poultry in Southeast Georgia.
- Savannah, GA (1888PressRelease) September 22, 2010 - Tammi Hall, Executive Director of The Claxton-Evans County Chamber of Commerce announced today that the first ever Evans County Chick'n Pick'n Festival on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Evans County Wildlife Club Festival Grounds in Claxton, Georgia was a huge success. The festival took place alongside the NeSmith Chevrolet Truck Contest and Monster Truck Rally which featured a dueling monster truck demonstration and many other fun festivities.
The day included arts and crafts, food, a 5K run and 1 mile fun run/walk ("Run for the Roost"), a chicken cook-off, wing eating contest, a pageant, live entertainment, dunking booth, and children's games and activities. A Service of Remembrance also occurred in honor and tribute to those who gave their lives nine years ago on September 11, 2001.
The chicken cook-off featured multiple cooking teams that competed to prepare the best chicken in three categories: grilled, fried and the main dish. The contestants competed for cash prizes totaling $2550 and festival attendees were treated to unlimited sampling of the teams' food. For the grilled category, Jimmie Montford of Mt. Vernon, GA won 1st place, Robert and Pat Collins of Claxton, GA won 2nd and Jerry Colson of Claxton, GA came in 3rd. In the fried category, Marie Dubberly of Glennville, GA placed 1st, Betsy Conley of Glennvillie, GA placed 2nd and Tommy Dubberly of Glennville, GA placed 3rd. The main dish winners were 1st place, Frank Greene and Martha Brewton of Claxton, GA, 2nd place winner, Claxton High School class of 1986 and 3rd place winner, Helen Anderson of Claxton, GA.
Evelyn Carpenter of Mt. Vernon, GA was named winner of the wing eating contest and was awarded a $200 cash prize. Carpenter ate one pound and five ounces of chicken to win the contest. The runner-up was Harold Rogers of Claxton, GA followed by 3rd place winner, Casey Kirkland also from Claxton.
Tammi Hall, Executive Director of the Claxton-Evans County Chamber of Commerce said, "We had a great time at the festival. People of all ages were there and participated in the fun events we had planned. The poultry industry is very valuable to our community so we plan to make this an annual event."
Star Harris, President of the Claxton-Evans County Chamber of Commerce and BDC Manager at NeSmith Chevrolet planned the event. She added, "Partnering the NeSmith Truck Rally with the Chick'n Pick'n Festival brought us great success. We hope to make next year's event just as big, if not bigger."
The Chick'n Pick'n Festival celebrated the importance of agriculture, especially the poultry industry, in Evans County. The event benefited the Evans County Wildlife Club, a non-profit organization that raises awareness of wildlife conservation and provides educational scholarships annually.
