The Chef's Academy Awards Educational Scholarship To McCutcheon High School Graduate

  • Indianapolis, IN (1888PressRelease) August 16, 2013 - The Chef's Academy, the Culinary Division of Harrison College, a private sector college serving more than 4,000 students worldwide, has announced that Alexandria Kurtz of McCutcheon High School in Lafayette, I.N. was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to The Chef's Academy for placing second in the school's 2013 Top Teen Talent Competition. The competition, hosted at The Chef's Academy's campus in Morrisville, N.C. highlights the culinary and pastry talents of high school students throughout the United States.

    Brianna Meeks of Jordan Matthews High School in North Carolina placed first in the competition, winning a full tuition scholarship in Culinary Arts worth more than $40,000 to The Chef's Academy. Six students were also awarded $1,000 scholarships for competing. Those students were:

    - Destiny Kiest of Boone Grove High School, Valparaiso, I.N.
    - Hannah Freeland of Cascade Senior High School, Clayton, I.N.
    - Anthony Burkhalter of Noblesville High School, Noblesville, I.N.
    - Taylor Thompson of Cary High School, Cary, N.C.
    - Haley Schronce of Tri-City Christian High School, Conover, N.C.
    - Adam Kingrea of Southern High School, Durham, N.C.

    The Chef's Academy accepted competition submissions from February to May. Interested junior and senior high school students submitted a recipe with a photo and a one-page paper about why they are interested in furthering their culinary education. Following the initial application, all entries were posted on Facebook, and the top nine students who received the most "likes" were invited to the school's North Carolina campus. There, they completed an interview portion and competed in a Top Chef-style cook-off for the prize. All students were given the same recipe and one hour and 45 minutes to prepare the dish. Dishes were judged by Chefs Jeffrey Bane, Eric Gephart and Paul Sottile from The Chef's Academy, as well as local professionals.
