  • (1888PressRelease) September 20, 2011 - New Delhi - The British School, one of India's best schools known for its high quality education based on the National Curriculum of England, IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme,conducted its third Teacher Internship Programme at the school. The Internship Programme at The British School continues to be popular and well received. It helps to strengthen the network with the universities and to widen the range of experiences that the interns bring to the students of the school. The school's internship programme has a strong reputation in Oxford and Cambridge, and received a large number of applications from interested and very able students at The Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Chicago. All the candidates had very strong academic records and an array of other achievements and work experiences. A total of seven students were selected from the three universities.

    The British School initiated the 'teacher internship' programme with the aims of:

    • Supporting its students by bringing them into partnership with some of the most able, successful young undergraduates and graduates from leading universities;
    • Strengthening its links with leading universities;
    • Giving its students expert, current advice on university and college applications;
    • Giving its teachers and students access to new ideas from experts in debating, Model United Nations competitions, sporting and cultural activities;
    • Enriching teaching and learning with up-to-date research and subject knowledge. .

    The four week internship programme extended from August 16 to September 9, 2011. The interns stay with British School host families and travel with their children to school. They work with students of all ages in different curriculum areas. They are involved in school projects such as training students for Model United Nations, Harvard Model Congress, the Student Council, Round Square & Community Service projects. They are especially involved with the Years 12 and 13 IB students, working with them in classrooms as well as helping them with university applications and essays.

    Corinna Fehst a German citizen who was raised in Spain. She has just graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA in Economics and Management. She found out about the internship programme offered by The British School in New Delhi via the Oxford Careers service. Corinna has always wanted to visit India to see the country and get to know its culture. She quickly realised that this programme would give her a unique chance to gain an understanding of today's India and Indian society (rather than just visiting the country as a tourist) by teaching its youngsters, as well as by living with a host family in Delhi. Having thoroughly enjoyed her studies at university, Corinna was looking forward to passing some of her knowledge on to her students, and to polish up the "dull" image that Economics often suffers from amongst students. She really enjoyed her time at the school, and would highly recommend the programme to anyone keen to teach and interact with young people. Besides the teaching, the programme gave Corinna the chance to engage in come of the school's social projects, as well as to help the students through university counselling. Both the staff and students were great to work with, and Corinna feels that she has picked up a variety of useful skills. She has also taken away many fond memories of her time at The British School. Furthermore, the teaching experience made her realise how challenging and rewarding the teaching profession can be, and she is definitely considering teaching as a job option at a later stage in life.

    Alexander Hitch is from the United States, specifically the State of Wisconsin. Alex has just graduated from the University of Chicago with a Master's degree in History and Sociology. Having just finished his degree, he wanted to spend time abroad teaching high school students, whilst also having the opportunity to garner what teaching at the IB (International Baccalaureate) level involves. The British School internship was offered through the University of Chicago's Career Service Office, and seemed like the perfect fit for his situation (duration and value). The British School has a superb academic programme, one to be envied by many schools the world over. If Alex does decide to teach at the high school level in the future, he would find a position at The British School very intriguing, he thinks.

    Mr. Graham Ranger, Director, The British School said "The internship programme provides an opportunity for students of The British School to raise their expectations even higher. All seven interns visiting the school from The Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Chicago have, to date, been successful in their respective school systems and in their university aspirations. We want our students not only to aim high but to have the tools to realise their lofty ambitions. The interns are rounded individuals with an international perspective on life. More importantly, they are achievers who have succeeded because of a combination of talents, hard work and an ability to think creatively. This is what we hope for from our school students."
