- Joplin, MO (1888PressRelease) June 08, 2011 - As residents in Joplin are beginning to pick up the pieces after devastating tornadoes ripped through the Missouri town, The Bra Recyclers are extending their support in an effort to provide encouragement in a unique way. This week, the Arizona-based textile recycler is preparing to ship recycled and new bras to the Lafayette House, a local women's shelter. The shelter has not only opened their doors to the victims of the tornado, but also serves children and families who are victims of domestic violence.
Along with recycled bras, The Bra Recyclers are also shipping a donation of pajamas from Soma Intimates, a nationwide lingerie and women's intimate apparel store. The shipment will provide an opportunity for women, both victims of the tornado and victims of violence, to begin the rebuilding process with confidence and strength.
The Bra Recyclers CEO, Elaine Birks-Mitchell, touched on the power a recycled bra can have for a woman in transition. According to Birks-Mitchell, "For some women, having a clean and properly fitted bra to wear is not at the top of the list due to other priorities, such as food, shelter, and safety. Right now, Joplin is facing a massive rebuilding effort. Homes or places of employment were completely destroyed. We want to do our part to help in the rebuilding effort by providing a simple encouragement that will lift a woman's spirit and boost her self esteem. It is amazing how something as simple as a bra can mean so much to a woman in transition."
The May 22nd tornado that devastated the city of Joplin claimed the lives of 138 people and counting. The F-5 tornado left a six mile path of destruction and according to Reuters "was the deadliest single tornado in the United States since 1947".
