(1888PressRelease) October 12, 2014 - MURAL UNVEILING
Members of the Manus Deery and Charles Love's families gathered in Derry's Bogside to attend the unveiling of the mural dedicated to them. With the families were Kate and Linda Nash and Vinny Coyle... all currently engaged in a struggle for justice for their loved ones. Sheila Coyle sister of Brian depicted in the mural was also present. Brian, shown running in the mural was killed on 30th June 1976 when a bomb exploded prematurely in the Bogside area of Derry.
"The two portraits within the mural are of Manus Deery (top) and Charles Love (bottom). Manus Deery was a 15 year old boy who was shot dead on 19 May 1972. He was hit by fragments from a ricochet bullet fired by a British Army sniper from an observation post on the city walls. Charles Love was 16 years old when he was killed on 28 January 1990. He had been watching a Bloody Sunday commemoration march when the IRA exploded a bomb on the city walls. The bomb was intended to kill or injure security force members on the city walls but flying debris struck Charles Love who was standing a quarter of a mile from the site of the bomb. Spokesman for the group of three artists famous worldwide as The Bogside Artists stated. "The sad fact is that morons and Philistines run this city and the media that misinforms it, which is why we are not supported by Sinn Fein dominated institutions like the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, or even our own local council. We must refurbish what is a major tourist draw and vital financial crutch to this city at our own expense, a fact that leaves the many foreign visitors we meet shell-shocked in disbelief. They come here with a presupposition that we are established figures in the art landscape here, cosetted and honoured by the political incumbents. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are mercilessly discriminated against on a daily basis and have been marginalized and left without funding for most of the two decades we have been together as a group. We make our own way in the world and always have. Indeed, were it not for the Housing Executive based in Belfast we would not be able to refurbish the murals at all! They are the only ones who saw fit to help us. And were it not for the numerous, intelligent academics around the world who understand our work and what we have tried to achieve, our work would certainly be left unsung such is the power and persistence of the evil leveled against us. If you do not understand this you will never understand how tourists are walked past the murals and many of them not even allowed out of their tour buses to even see them. You have to see this to believe it... but it goes on,... on a daily basis, year in, year out. We sail on regardless, and will refurbish our murals despite them all because we believe in ART and will defend our God-Given right to express ourselves through it. And what we have painted here is the complete opposite of the juvenile propaganda beloved by sectarians. It is ART par excellence. It speaks for itself and will go on doing so, bearing witness to a prolonged period of human suffering the politicos think they can forget by burying any evidence that remains of it, or doing their damnedest to hide it from the world. How dumb is that?"
