First Church, established over 92 years ago in the Brookland Community of Washington DC and currently worshipping at 1219 Hamlin Street NE, Washington, DC, will launch their second campus, First Church Prince George's County on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Regal Hyattsville Royale 14. Additionally, First Church will launch its virtual congregation, First Church Online, at live.firstchurchwash.org. If that's not enough, you can still listen to their Psalm 91 Broadcast on Praise 104.1FM, locally and globally, each Sunday morning at 8am. If that's not enough you can join First Church on their Intercessory Prayer line from 12am - 1am and again from 5am - 10am daily for prayer and biblical counseling or you can join them every Tuesday night for relevant and life-changing Bible study offered at the DC location and via teleconference.
At first glance a church service in a movie theater may seem a little strange, but First Church Prince George's County believes it is rather normal. "We want attendees to capture the experience of a loving, growing, and serving environment filled with inspiration, relationship building, training and prayer," says Pastor Ralph Martino. The theatre setting is comfortable and non-threatening for people who may be tentative with stepping inside a traditional church building.
The service at First Church Prince George's County will feature the choir leading the congregants in praise and worship and a succinct message about a relevant topic in today's climate. There will be series on the family, relationships, marriage, and accountability. According to Pastor Ralph Martino, "We want to infuse the community with the power of faith. We want to inject hope in the veins of the community and influence it with love, joy, peace and forgiveness. We want to inspire youth and young adults in the community by showing them a better way of living; and impact the community in deterring criminal behavior by instilling Godly character." First Church Prince George's County will be Where Communities Become a Family.
In the Fall of 2013, First Church began to lay the groundwork for the move to Hyattsville. While attending a movie with his family, Pastor Martino observed a banner announcing a church service to be held in the theatre. He was led to research the possibility of using a theatre as a worship site. Regal Theatre Church Group was contacted and God showed favor by making worship services a reality at the Hyattsville location.
The Evangelism Ministry of First Church has distributed thousands of flyers, designed as "movie tickets" (in English and Spanish), personally inviting residents of the community to join us for this awesome experience. Several businesses have demonstrated their support in welcoming First Church to Prince George's County by making these flyers available in their place of business.
According to Pastor Martino," the goal of First Church of Prince George's County is to infuse, inject, influence, inspire and impact the community with the life, love and liberty of the Lord Jesus Christ." Although targeting the "Millennials" or Generation Y", Pastor Martino's belief is that the theatre-style church is welcoming and embracing with a wide range of different age groups.
First Church will meet Sundays at 8:00 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. at the Regal Hyattsville Royale 14 Theatre, 6505 America Boulevard, Hyattsville, MD 20782. First Church will continue to meet at 11:15am at 1219 Hamlin Street NE, Washington, DC 20017.
