The Aaron School community participates in "College Month"
Aaron School, a private K-12 special education school, hosts seminars and visits for juniors and sophomores as a part of the annual "college month" in February this year.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) March 12, 2015 - Aaron School, a private K-12 special education school located in the East Side of Manhattan, New York City, held a series of school-wide activities and visits during the annual "College Month" in February, 2015, in order to prepare students to transition to college and life after school.
Aaron School provides special education services to children with reading, writing, math, attention, social and/or sensory challenges and is known for its individualized approach and multi-sensory teaching.
The College Month witnessed visits from representatives of universities and post-secondary support programs for children with learning disabilities. Students were also taken on field trips to several colleges and universities to get acquainted with the college campus and admission requirements.
Aaron School's Director of Transition and Guidance, held individual meetings with juniors and sophomores throughout the month in order to understand their experience of the activities held and make individual transition plans and choices.
Aaron School's College month was initiated with a session wherein the students interviewed their parents about their own college experiences. The students reported getting to know several things about their parents that they weren't acquainted with earlier.
The students were also visited by Travis McArthur, the Admissions Coordinator for The College Internship Program (CIP), a post-secondary support program for young adults with Asperger's, ADHD and other learning differences. Tammy Byron from Thames Academy at Mitchell College visited Aaron's high school students and provided them with insight into the differences between high school and college life and the importance of maintaining a good GPA throughout high school.
The school students also visited universities such as the Adelphi University in Garden City, New York and Borough of Manhattan Community College where they learned about the programs offered and got a taste of college life by going on campus tours.
To conclude College Month Aaron School co-sponsored the COTAGS college fair. The college fair served as an opportunity for parents of the students to get to know more about post-secondary programs and colleges.
The annual "College Month" acts to accentuate the benefits of the THRIVE program institutionalized for sophomores to help equip them with academic and life skills to enable a smooth transition to college, vocational courses or work-life after school.
Aaron School is known to offer an academically rigorous curriculum that is aligned with the New York State Learning Standards.
