THE 8TH ANNUAL REEL RASQUACHE ART & FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ITS 2011 HONOREES
The Reel Rasquache Art & Film Festival is the only festival of its kind that focuses primarily on films from US Latino independent filmmakers.
- (1888PressRelease) April 29, 2011 - Pasadena, California -- The 8th Annual Reel Rasquache Art & Film Festival (RRAFF) announced today its honorees for 2011 which will be presented on Sunday, May 15th at the Regency Academy 6 Theatres in Pasadena, California. This year the festival is proud to present awards to film director Gabriela Tagliavini and featured artist Margaret Garcia.
The 2011 Trailblazer Award, which honors one whose achievements have advanced new practices and/or challenging understandings of the U.S. Latino perspectives and representations, will be presented to Gabriela Tagliavini. Tagliavini is being recognized for her commitment to representing Latinas on the big screen. Beginning with her directorial debut, The Woman Every Man Wants (aka Perfect Lover), Tagliavini was named Best Director at three international film festivals including the New York Independent Film Festival in 2001. In addition, Tagliavini's Ladies' Night, distributed by Disney/Buena Vista was the #1 movie in Mexico's box office for 2004. Her film won three MTV Latin Movie Awards, including "Best Actress." The film's soundtrack released in the U.S. in 2007 by Sony Music achieved platinum success. In all her scripts, Tagliavini is committed to portraying Latina women of strength and not the stereotypes so often seen in Hollywood.
The 2011 RRAFF Featured Artist this year is Margaret Garcia. A Los Angeles resident who received her M.F.A. from the University of Southern California, Garcia will be receiving the 2011 Vision Award. She teaches and lectures throughout the region, and has produced a number of murals in the Los Angeles area. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions in California, Texas, and Mexico, including her piece "Tree of Califas," which adorns the Universal City Metro Station. In her paintings and mural projects, she attempts to define herself in relation to her community, and vice-versa. "I define Chicano art by making it," she has said, and indeed for Garcia being part of a community is part of being human.
The Reel Rasquache Art & Film Festival is the only festival of its kind that focuses primarily on films from US Latino independent filmmakers. The Festival will showcase over 20 recent Latino-produced and/or themed films produced nationally and internationally, most of them Los Angeles premieres. Together with guest filmmaker Q&A sessions, panels and a Directors' Roundtable, the Festival provides a unique local celebration of films by and about U.S. Latino communities and experiences. Emphasizing a range of media, from feature-length films and documentaries, to short subjects, and animations, the Festival's program will cover a number of themes that focus on the rich diversity of U.S. Latino culture and history. The Festival annually brings a broad base of grassroots and professional community members together with U.S. Latino film and video independents and entertainment industry representatives. The festival will take place May 13 - 15, 2011 and will be presented in association with Latin Heat Entertainment.
