The 4 Miler at Garret Mountain Makes Fitness a Family Affair
Sept. 8 Fundraiser for St. Joseph's Children's Hospital will feature Walks and Runs for Adults and Children.
- Bergen-Passaic, NJ (1888PressRelease) August 31, 2012 - September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and Childhood Cancer Awareness month. What a great time to encourage children of all ages to get moving and stay active for a cause.
On Saturday, Sept. 8, children and families will have a chance to enjoy the many healthful benefits of physical activity while supporting a good cause by taking part in The 4 Miler at Garret Mountain at Garret Mountain Reservation, 288 Rifle Camp Road, Woodland Park, N.J. The run/walk event will benefit St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.
Sponsored by the Sax Macy Fromm (SMF) Foundation, this first annual fundraiser will support child life services at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department, which provides state-of-the-art family-centered care for children with cancer and serious blood disorders.
"Health care at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital is designed to treat the whole child, including the patient's family. It's truly fitting that The 4 Miler at Garret Mountain will bring families together to support the healthcare needs of young patients at St. Joseph's," says Michael Lamacchia, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. "We are grateful to the Sax Macy Fromm Foundation for sponsoring this community-based event."
The event represents a fun and exciting way to get kids interested in physical activity, while at the same time empowering them with a sense of accomplishment through helping other youngsters in need. Whether walking, running or simply having fun, participation in this family-friendly event will have an incredible impact on the lives of hundreds of young patients and their families.
The scenic 568-acre recreational Garret Mountain Reservation, an area landmark with sweeping views of Northern N.J. and the New York City skyline, provides the perfect backdrop for this fundraising event. Kids' dashes, with sprint distances ranging from 25 to 200 yards, are among the event's highlights for children ages two to 11, all of whom will receive finishing ribbons. A 1.5-mile trail walk is also available for participants who want a scenic tour of the reservation's interior. The 4 Miler run will take place on a double loop USATF certified course. After the race, participants can continue enjoying the day's festivities, which include live DJ entertainment, prizes, kids' activities, and food and beverages.
The SMF Foundation is absorbing all expenses associated with the event in order to donate 100 percent of the proceeds directly to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. To register for the event or become a sponsor, visit www.smf-cpa.com/events.aspx.
Pre-registration through Sept. 3 is $22 ($20 for USATF members). The kids' dash entry fee is $8. Families and other groups of four or more qualify for discounted rates. For more information, call (973) 472-6250 or visit www.facebook.com/SaxMacyFromm.
