Thailand Proposes Restriction of Two Persistent Chemicals

  • (1888PressRelease) February 07, 2025 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 015.25, highlighting Thailand’s plans to designate Dechlorane Plus and UV-328 as persistent organic pollutants (POP) under the Category 3 hazardous substances list.

UV-328 services a wide variety of applications as a UV absorber, helping protect surfaces against discoloration and degradation from UV/sunlight exposure. Dechlorane Plus is commonly used as a flame retardant. It should also be noted, the announcement made by Thailand’s Department of Industrial Works (DIW) in December 2024 specifically includes its syn- and anti-isomers.

The action of the Thai government follows the addition of both Dechlorane Plus and UV-328, along with methoxychlor, to Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention in May 2023. If approved, the restrictions will take effect the day after publication in the Government Gazette. Under Thai law, a license is required for the manufacture, import, export or possession of a Category 3 Hazardous Substance.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 015.25 provides additional information on applications of Dechlorane Plus and UV-328 and includes a helpful table with their Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) numbers.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 015.25 for more details.
