Thai Law Firm Advises Thais To Learn More On Asean Economic Community

Top Quote With the Asean Economic Community set to be implemented in late 2015, recent surveys have shown a significant portion of the Thai public lacks a good understanding of the regional integration and how it could affect them. And that is something which needs to be addressed, according to Thai law firm BSA Law. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2013 - Bangkok - Due to be launched on 31 December 2015, the Asean Economic Community (AEC) aims to establish the 10 member Asean bloc as a single market and production base. One of the key elements of the AEC will be the free flow of skilled labour and services into and out of Thailand, one of the founding members of ASEAN.

Thai law firm BSA Law is stressing the need for Thailand's private sector - in particular small and medium enterprises (SMEs) - to familiarise themselves with the changes, challenges and potential benefits the AEC will bring.

'This applies equally to those business persons who have companies already in operation as well as those who are looking at starting a business in Thailand. Sound business advice for Thailand's companies will serve them well in the single Asean community" said BSA Law spokesman Apisakde Kongkangwanchoke.

In the Life's Good Poll commissioned by LG Electronics Thailand and conducted by Suan Dusit Poll on 1,037 Bangkokians aged 20 to 45 in late 2012, 12% of respondents indicated they did not know much about the AEC. Of those respondents who did know, 53% viewed the AEC as beneficial while 35% saw it in a negative way.

Another survey by University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce found more than half of the skilled labourers and professionals in Thailand lacked a good understanding of the AEC. Interviews were conducted with professionals from each of the six service careers which are under the Asean Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Services - dentistry, medicine, nursing, accountancy services, engineering and architecture.

"With 'Asean Economic Community' and 'AEC' appearing almost daily in the Thai news, there is a concerted effort to prepare Thailand to compete with its nine fellow Asean nations. We strongly encourage business operators and the public in general to seek advice on the AEC, on any number of issues like business law, labour law, legal services, immigration and tax consulting" commented BSA Law's Apisakde.
