  • (1888PressRelease) July 10, 2010 - Austin, TX-Texas Hill Country Olive Company, a two-year old orchard located in Dripping Springs, took home silver and bronze medals at the 2010 Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competition. Texas Hill Country Olive Company entered the competition after receiving encouragement and praise from their customers on the taste and quality of their oil.

Texas Hill Country Olive Company's Miller's Blend is a combination of Arbequina and Mission olives rife with buttery and grassy undertones. This distinctive blend took home the silver medal in the robust category while Terra Verde, Texas Hill Country's Estate Blend took home the bronze medal in the medium category. Terra Verde is a floral, almost fruity blend of the three types of olives grown at the orchard, Mission, Arbequina and Pendolino and has a peppery finish.

The 2010 Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competition featured nearly 400 applicants, most of whom are California and international growers that have been cultivating and pressing olives for generations. Only olive oils holding the extra virgin classification are allowed to enter the contest and the oils are categorized as delicate (light intensity), medium (medium intensity), and robust (intense fruitiness).

"We may only have a few years of experience under our belts but we believe these awards prove that we're an industry leader," said John Gambini, Co-Owner of Texas Hill Country Olive Company. "Since opening in 2008, our top priority has been to produce the highest quality olive oil. Our organic farming practices make for some challenges but they ensure 'award-winning' taste and that our land will remain healthy and fertile for generations."

"We're extremely proud of our silver and bronze wins," said co-owner Rick Mensik. "We competed against some of the most established and well-known olive oil producers in the world. "

Only about one percent of the olive oil consumed by Americans is produced by US growers and out of the 22 growers in Texas, Texas Hill Country Olive Company is one of only four that are producing olives. Most of the olive growers in the US are located in California.
